Telegrams have replaced e-mails, and Holmes now finds himself in a horse-drawn carriageinstead of a cab. The hit BBC TV series, which usually takes place in the present day, hastransported its characters back to Victorian London, where author Arthur Conan Doyle’s classictales were set.

The latest Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, hit Chinese cinemas on Jan 4, and it’s aloving homage to Doyle’s original vision.

最新《神探夏洛克：可惡新娘》于1月4日登陸中國影院，當(dāng)然它還是對(duì)柯南匠爾原著的致敬。

Many of Doyle’s stories are spine-tinglers, full of fright and suspense. Yet, confined by its21st century backdrop, the Sherlock series hasn’t been able to fully present some of Doyle’sgothic stories. But this time-traveling Sherlock special allows the production team to present akind of story that was prevalent in Doyle’s era.

道爾的小說充滿了驚悚和懸疑，讓人背脊發(fā)涼。但是受到21世紀(jì)的年代限制，《神探夏洛克》劇集無法完全呈現(xiàn)道爾原著中的哥特風(fēng)格。不過這次穿越版《神探夏洛克特別篇》給了創(chuàng)作團(tuán)隊(duì)重現(xiàn)道爾時(shí)代流行故事的機(jī)會(huì)。

“If you want to do a ghost story, you’ve got to go Victorian,” Sherlock show-runner StevenMoffat told Vanity Fair magazine. “There’s a lot of fog.”

To adapt to Sherlock’s new Victorian setting, the show’s protagonists have made a fewpersonality adjustments.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes becomes “a little more polished” in his role as aVictorian gentleman. Meanwhile, Holmes’ sidekick John Watson, played by Martin Freeman, is“more uptight”, said Moffat.

莫法特透露，演員本尼迪克特康伯巴奇飾演的夏洛克輠爾摩斯變得“更加優(yōu)雅”，以符合他維多利亞時(shí)期紳士的人設(shè)。同時(shí)，福爾摩斯的助手約翰丠生(馬丁弗里曼飾)則會(huì)變得“更加焦躁”。

What’s remarkable about The Abominable Bride is the freedom with which it explores modern-day themes, in spite of its Victorian backdrop.

雖然故事設(shè)定在維多利亞時(shí)期，《可惡的新娘》最值得稱道的是它探討的現(xiàn)代主題下的自由。

Spoiler alert here! The ghostly bride turns out to be a group of betrayed women who attemptto punish their abusive male lovers and defend their rights. In other words, the bride is theidea of feminism, and her appearance coincides with the birth of the suffragettes in VictorianEngland.

注意，前方劇透!幽靈新娘其實(shí)只是一群被男人拋棄的婦女，她們要懲罰背叛她們的男人，維護(hù)自己的權(quán)利。換句話說，新娘就是女權(quán)主義的化身，她的出現(xiàn)同維多利亞時(shí)期英格蘭興起的婦女參政論不謀而合。

And there’s an additional twist in the story’s plot. The show’s time travel is actually ahallucination, brought on when Holmes has a drug overdose.

電影版還添加了一些反轉(zhuǎn)的劇情。故事中的穿越其實(shí)只是福爾摩斯過量服用藥物后致幻反應(yīng)。

Despite all the acclaim the show has received, some viewers have complained about the specialepisode’s confusing, time-jumping plot. But the key elements in Sherlock stay the same.

盡管該片受到了不少贊譽(yù)，還是有不少影迷抱怨特別篇?jiǎng)∏榛靵y、時(shí)間線索不連貫。不過還好，《神探夏洛克》的精髓還在。

Sherlock and Watson’ s brilliant detective work doesn’t change. And more importantly, theduo’s fast-talking friendship remains intact.

卷福和華生絕妙的推理還在。更重要的是這對(duì)好基友打嘴仗式的友誼依舊堅(jiān)固。

“You’re Sherlock Holmes, wear the damn hat,” Watson quips, shoving the deerstalker inSherlock’s face. It’s a familiar line, delivered in an unfamiliar setting.
